chanter1944: a lilac tree in bloom (Wisconsin spring: lilac season)
It's fully online this year, but it's still on. I've already been on one panel, dealing with acespec identities and representation, and I've got another Sunday. I'll be attending at least a couple more between now and then. But seriously, I *need* this four-day weekend. I took today off deliberately, given it's WisCon weekend, and con or not, that was absolutely the right call. Good gosh.

I intend to be up and out early tomorrow, the better to get to the farmers market and back again before the 10 AM panels happen. Wish me luck? :P

[personal profile] jesse_the_k, are you in on WisCon this year?

Now with repaired linkage. Oops! Brought to you by erasers: Don't leave home without one!*

*If anyone gets that reference, come squee at me? I will so gleefully squee back!
chanter1944: a Pringles can with the words 'you can't write just one' written across it (drabbles are like pringles)
That situation when you've been drawn in by a cast of characters but are still utterly canonblind (yes, obvious puns go here), so you're left wondering just where three of them were in the lead-up to a certain day in June of 1944...

We know Ginger was well out of the invasion itself, unless I missed a detail somewhere, and as for Erich... I'm deliberately not lingering over that one. :( Marie's potential whereabouts and actions are a whole other story in themselves.

That doesn't even get to the stealth crossover I've been contemplating on and off, involving a cameo by a genteel American lawyer who's trustworthy enough to be an OSS contact when he travels. I will not drop his surname just yet. XD

In the interest of archiving things in places other than AO3 and my own drive(s), and because not everything I'm about to share has been posted outside the relevant comm, heads up, circlethingie: You get an incoming fiction flurry!

Most, if not all of these are three-sentence ficathon fills. Each cut tag contains fandom and prompt info. The Valeris one references canon mental violation, so please consider tastes and headspace if you go there. The TNG crossover one requires knowledge of the specific novel I've looped in. Aaaaand the Sleeping Beauty one has [community profile] milliways_bar echoes and resonances, hi all.

chanter1944: Uhura in the foreground, Chekov looking quizically at something off to the right in the background (TOS - Chekov and Uhura: nerdy joy)
It is so incredibly nice to be able to go to whichever panels, readings, parties, or other events you want, but then catch the city bus home, shower in your own shower, and sleep in your own bed. It's doubly nice when you can settle the two plants (one red geranium, one unknown volunteer who may be in the mint family) in on your balcony with very little fuss, save the fact that one corner of a copy of All Systems Red somehow got buried in wet soil on the trip home...! That book is now standing fanned out on my desk, and will stay there overnight. I sincerely hope it dries out with zero damage to the text. It's not for me! I have no desire to give a friend damaged books! Yikes!

So far, I've adopted those two plants (the unknown possibly-mint is Odo, because talk about your embodiment of Odo'Ital, while the geranium is Leeta, the often-underestimated pretty face) from the Gathering in a swap for two bottles of nail polish, spent too much in the dealers' room with no regrets whatsoever, chatted up a storm with friends old and new, drank too much caffeine, and ducked in and out of a couple Zoom panels. I already know tomorrow is going to be extremely busy, between panels, readings, the haiku earring party, and the Martha Wells book signing, not to mention trying to get writing time in.

Whew!
chanter1944: Captain Sulu, looking straight ahead and wearing a determined expression, on a muted green and gold background (TOS - Sulu: quarter impulse power)
It's a certain actor's birthday for a few minutes yet. See icon. Given who we've so recently lost, I had to say something.

Thank you, sir, for bringing a beloved helmsman-captain to life. :)
chanter1944: Uhura in the foreground, Chekov looking quizically at something off to the right in the background (TOS - Chekov and Uhura: nerdy joy)
That is, on Thanksgiving night, staying up and watching all three Back To The Future movies in succession! Yes, we did it again last night, though I was the only one who stayed up for the entirety without conking out in my seat at some point or other. Heh.

Now I want to be writing all kinds of quirkily romantic Emmett/Clara, in both that steampunk 'verse I've been adding to since last year and the canon fic I've been poking at since New Year's Eve, but I'm currently at the kitchen table in the house I grew up in, and even getting into that mindset while my parents are within conversational distance is... not going to happen. :/ I tried, a little, last night, and the sensation was unpleasant enough that I left it alone after a minute or so.

Ah, shoot!

Do I need an icon for this fandom, or what? ... What I may actually need is an Emmett/Clara icon, but I'm sure as heck not going there in any kind of detail until I get home!
chanter1944: an older house and surrounding autumn scenery (Wisconsin autumn: smells like fall)
I can now say I've seen Come From Away performed in person! I was still masked while doing so, and unashamedly. That did not stop me singing along in spots! XD

Spoilers and further squee below the cut. )

Now that I'm done squeeing, I finish out the workday, put a few more things in a suitcase, and head for the marsh for Thanksgiving. I'll still be around online, but if I'm scarce, I'm probably getting bounced on by goofy niblings.
chanter1944: Émilie Agreste, acting in the canon movie Solitude, peeking out from behind a large umbrella (ML - Émilie: camouflage mode)
Specifically, the news that Robert Clary has died at age 96. My first reaction was literally, "Oh, Louis!" :( Imagine that said in a dismayed Wisconsinite squeak.

Not sure if [personal profile] rose_of_pollux has seen this news yet... I hope she gets the word from an actual news site rather than my social media post, because I know how miserable it is to find out something via somebody's incidental post and get blindsided. Been there.

Point of respectful order: Is the phrase 'may their memory be for a blessing', when speaking of a deceased Jewish person, something a non-Jew can say, or does that cross a boundary? I'd rather not overstep if I can avoid it.
chanter1944: a cream-colored yellow Labrador lying at the top of a staircase, one paw draped over the top step (mellow yellow)
First, I owe [personal profile] kellan_the_tabby some really decent hot chocolate or something, for the assist that answered a couple questions that were absolutely plaguing me! May you have zip zilch zero creepy facebook data mining demons on your tail as a result of that assist.

Second, I just had a work phone call where one thing led to another, led to the fact that the customer and I had both competed in forensics in Wisconsin throughout high school! Speech and debate nerds unite! We absolutely went to a couple of the same tournaments over the years, though in different categories, and I continued competition through college where she did not. We also have the same college degree, and both of us have used it in the past but aren't now. Oh my gosh this world is minuscule, and sometimes that's fantastic. :)

Wow, I miss forensics competition. If there were a semi-professional or professional circuit, I'd so be on it. I've said that for years. I know, poetry slams and open mic nights kiiiiinda sorta fit that bill, but they're not quite the same thing.

That's a Fandom Trumps Hate 2020 auction promotion banner, for the record. It links to the offerings list at the dedicated journal. It is no small list, I can assure you! The tags are incredibly useful when browsing, as I discovered when doing some sniffing around of my own.
I'm still doing these out of order, but here's a great big giant oh well! :)

Eeps! Yeah, this one is serious levels of difficult for me... But I *have* been published and paid for it, hi there GlitterShip, and I'm still possibly inordinately proud of the several fanfic series I've got going on AO3, and the crowdfunded writing hasn't gone for nothing either, thank you again to everyone who's so far sponsored in that arena.

And this ham radio callsign will never, ever get old, any more than the shiny will wear off these Red Cross gallon donation pins. There are, so far, nine of the latter. The former is one alone, although it's technically two by three, and so it's staying, because I like the call I was issued.
And I clear a snowflake challenge backlog before getting swept up in football shenanigans!

Rec at least three fanworks that you didn’t create. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Put Aside Fear For Courage by SearchingforSerendippity.
I know I've rec'd this one at least once, if not twice before, but it is fantastic. It's the fic that got me started crossing over Star Trek and Young Wizards. I won't spoil it, but oh my goodness does it nail characterization across the board. Bonus points: Watch for the fabulous cross-series cameo!

Singing Songs To Stir The Soul by GuardianKarenTerrier.
This is Miraculous Ladybug, in a universe tinged with a little more everyday magic than canon will admit to. It's an absolutely enchanting look at musician Luka, magic user Luka, and the inseparable nature of those two states for Paris's favorite soft-spoken songster. I adore the lyrical (no pun intended) language in here. This author's entire works list is worth a read, to be honest.

Fomites by Brittlestars.
Confession: I have yet to play Pandemic, though I did spend a portion of one afternoon during last WisCon assisting in enabling accessible mode for one game, so if somebody brings that set this upcoming year...! You do not have to know the game's mechanics to get utterly sucked into the storyline of this fic, as evidenced by my finding it randomly, starting to read, and getting completely hooked! The characters are technically original, but you'd never know it, so skillfully are they written. Be aware, this one does deal with world-spanning illnesses and deaths from same, but nothing truly graphic shows up in text. Inferences, however, are there to be made.
Well, we *do* have snow inbound, and I hope it's friendly. No car crashes, spills, or general ickiness, but plenty of substance with which to create, say, ski trails and snowball fight ammunition! But here, here's some more.

In your own space, set some goals for the coming year. They can be fannish or not, public or private. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

*Write up a storm! Seriously, I both want and need to get a metaphorical ton of writing done this year. I have multiple WSIP going, between the alterna-wielder and kwami vignettes series, the Not Alone 'verse, the orange!verse, a handful of Polychrome Heroics pieces, and the string of Star Trek/Young Wizards crossovers, to say nothing of that BoB with languages in thing and the secret fic of secretness I'm writing as inspired by fic in an entirely new to me fandom... and oh crud, the Hetalia gone serious thing... I need to do a bunch of writing, is what it is.

*Finding parties interested in sponsoring any of my currently-available works would also be marvelous. The stories I've currently got listed are admittedly pretty niche, and I know it, so that doesn't help. Hmm.

*Challenge and event participation! I am notoriously bad at this of late, but I plan to change that. The first step is going to be signing up for the Fandom Trumps Hate auction! .. Aaaaaah nervous!

*Unrelated to fandom, unless your fandom is anthropomorphizing RL plants, in which case have at it, if I can keep these jalapeño seedlings alive, I will be a happy gal. Ditto if all five currently nestled in a seed starter pot that was until recently a paperclip box (thank you, Ysabet) germinate. I'll be transferring all five, if they all do sprout, to different pots, not thinning out the smaller. I like the little plants.

*Cosplay! This is a longshot, but I'm entertaining the idea of turning up for one day of WisCon in costume as Mayura. I'd *really* love to go in costume as Paon Bleu i.e. Émilie as I depict her in the Not Alone 'verse, but a) no one would get it, and b) she has functional wings and tail when transformed and uses them all the time. So yes, Mayura! I wonder if I could somehow signify that my version is a redeemed Mayura? ... I may need to borrow someone's eyes in RL for this. And no, to those who've seen me RL, I'm not dying my hair.
This is always one of my favorite of these challenges, if not the favorite of the lot for me. It's so much fuuuuuun, on both sides of the equation. :) I freely admit, by the way, that I'm cribbing extensively from previous years' lists.

In your own space, make a list — anything between one and ten things is a sweet spot, but don't feel constrained by that! - of things that you wish existed in fandom or elsewhere, or that you'd like someone to make for you. Are you dying for podfic of your writing? Do you need icons for a character that doesn't get much fanart? Is there a story you want to read? Are you looking for new canons to get into? Would you like a collaborator for a project?

Maybe you want more people to talk about a certain fandom with, or you'd love to trade ficlets with somebody over email. Maybe you're new to a fandom and would like some recs to start reading, or communities to join. This is the time to ask!

Hat tip to [community profile] milliways_bar, which is a panfandom roleplay community that's been going for something like 15 years, first on LJ, now on DW. It is a *blast*, and I owe my friendship with [personal profile] ceitfianna, Saph, River-mun, Desire-mun, and many others to it. I play Sariel Rager of Star Trek TNG fame over there, though I really need to get her back inna bar soonish...

Hat tip also to [community profile] queerly_beloved, which is a welcoming meeting place for MOGAI folks of many/any spectra, and [community profile] thisfinecrew, which fair warning is based in U.S. political activism.

For fandom communities, I recommend [community profile] allthemiraculous for Miraculous Ladybug, [community profile] fandomgiftbox as a warm fuzzy panfandom gift exchange, and... I really should find an active Star Trek comm over here.
Yikes! I'm late! Better late than never? :)

In your own space, introduce yourself! Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

If you already have a sticky post or full bio, make sure they’re up to date so that people visiting your journal can learn something about you. Update your interests; make sure your fic posts are current; check that all your links work, etc. If you don’t already have a post introducing yourself, create one!

My profile is up to date as of a couple months ago, as are my interests. For completeness's sake, as well as for those who'd like to or may not otherwise know (trying to write profiles in the actual profile space is darn hard, for some reason), here are a few more details about yours truly. I'm thirty-something, CIS female but queer as the eponymous 3-dollar bill - pretty darn charcoal grey-asexual, biromantic and probably demiromantic, and kinky (not disclosing details unless asked) - proudly living in the upper Midwest of the States. Wisconsin is my home, and pretty likely always will be; I've tried living elsewhere and it does *not* work. I've been a towering nerd of multiple stripes since I can remember, so expect multiple and layered references to fly. I'm a fic writer as well as reader, I'm the author of one professionally published original poem so far, and I practice crowdfunded creativity besides. That's one for which I do have a relevant sticky.

I'm also both totally blind and nonautistic neurodiverse, to the tune of anxiety, dysthymia, synaesthesia and some unnamed but still evident unusual wiring throughout. The former two aren't fun. The latter two don't feel like bugs at all, despite what society might say. Telling society where to go stick its Shadow-touched ideas is an ongoing process. The blindness is, for me, just another aspect of who I am. I don't tend to say much on the subject of accessibility challenges or, especially, disability politics; I burned out on the political aspect of blindness years ago due to some truly horrible experiences, and I will not be going back. I did have a guide dog, one much-loved and dearly-missed velvet fuzzball of a mellow yellow lab, for over a decade. I don't believe I'll ever get another.
