chanter1944: a Pringles can with the words 'you can't write just one' written across it (drabbles are like pringles)
Re-boosting this because [personal profile] fauxfox has a medical situation keeping them out of work, which is doing them no favors at all. See this post for further info, but I'll take prompts on *this* post if anyone's inclined to donate over in their GoFundMe's direction.
chanter1944: a Pringles can with the words 'you can't write just one' written across it (drabbles are like pringles)
To say that the Wisteria Auction Thingie is still open for prompts, should you be so inclined.
This sprang out of the Wisteria Drabble Auction, because [personal profile] mama_kestrel is a wonderful human being. :) It was initially meant to be a double drabble, but it um... didn't stay that way! :)

She asked for something out of the orange!verse, and so she got. Once in a rare morning, Sandy wakes up before dawn. Absolutely no warnings to speak of here, and if you think something might be autobiographical of a certain author... ask me about it? Truly, feel free to ask. 610 words.

Grayline Conditions )
chanter1944: Star Trek's Commander Sonak, on a swirly green and pink background, one eyebrow raised (TOS - Sonak: for life's sake)
I'm not entirely sure how to write this post up without being a) creepy or b) unaccountably sappy, so I'm just going to go for it.

So, circlethingie (and hopefully various others, if this gets traction), remember the other day, before I decamped to the marsh to decompress in the wake of the diarrhea storm that was last week's SCOTUS decision flurry? The post where I linked to a twitterly friend's PayPal and GoFundMe, as they're trying to make rent and basic necessities and struggling?

Well, darn it, the idea of someone getting evicted despite doing no wrong and working their tail off... it's bugging me and won't quit. So.

This is a wisteria drabble auction (they're in the deep south, and wisteria is at least friendly to one's sniffer).

Circlethingie and whoever else wants in, drop me a prompt in the comments (fandom if so desired, if you know I know it, rating preference or lack thereof, or just a keyword or two, whichever), donate $10 to them and let me know you have (you can totally DM me with that info, no need to float it in public), and I will write a drabble for you.

Feel free to link, if you like. The more who join in, the merrier. Please keep in mind that I will not write mental violation, forced intimacy, or humiliation/degradation. Transmisic, queerphobic, or anti-enby anything are also 'no way in heck' limits.

Let's fight some entropy, folks. Please?

And yes, this icon is a deliberateness.
I'm still doing these out of order, but here's a great big giant oh well! :)

Promote/Rec/Sing the Praises* of Yourself! Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Eeps! Yeah, this one is serious levels of difficult for me... But I *have* been published and paid for it, hi there GlitterShip, and I'm still possibly inordinately proud of the several fanfic series I've got going on AO3, and the crowdfunded writing hasn't gone for nothing either, thank you again to everyone who's so far sponsored in that arena.

And this ham radio callsign will never, ever get old, any more than the shiny will wear off these Red Cross gallon donation pins. There are, so far, nine of the latter. The former is one alone, although it's technically two by three, and so it's staying, because I like the call I was issued.
Well, we *do* have snow inbound, and I hope it's friendly. No car crashes, spills, or general ickiness, but plenty of substance with which to create, say, ski trails and snowball fight ammunition! But here, here's some more.

In your own space, set some goals for the coming year. They can be fannish or not, public or private. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

*Write up a storm! Seriously, I both want and need to get a metaphorical ton of writing done this year. I have multiple WSIP going, between the alterna-wielder and kwami vignettes series, the Not Alone 'verse, the orange!verse, a handful of Polychrome Heroics pieces, and the string of Star Trek/Young Wizards crossovers, to say nothing of that BoB with languages in thing and the secret fic of secretness I'm writing as inspired by fic in an entirely new to me fandom... and oh crud, the Hetalia gone serious thing... I need to do a bunch of writing, is what it is.

*Finding parties interested in sponsoring any of my currently-available works would also be marvelous. The stories I've currently got listed are admittedly pretty niche, and I know it, so that doesn't help. Hmm.

*Challenge and event participation! I am notoriously bad at this of late, but I plan to change that. The first step is going to be signing up for the Fandom Trumps Hate auction! .. Aaaaaah nervous!

*Unrelated to fandom, unless your fandom is anthropomorphizing RL plants, in which case have at it, if I can keep these jalapeño seedlings alive, I will be a happy gal. Ditto if all five currently nestled in a seed starter pot that was until recently a paperclip box (thank you, Ysabet) germinate. I'll be transferring all five, if they all do sprout, to different pots, not thinning out the smaller. I like the little plants.

*Cosplay! This is a longshot, but I'm entertaining the idea of turning up for one day of WisCon in costume as Mayura. I'd *really* love to go in costume as Paon Bleu i.e. Émilie as I depict her in the Not Alone 'verse, but a) no one would get it, and b) she has functional wings and tail when transformed and uses them all the time. So yes, Mayura! I wonder if I could somehow signify that my version is a redeemed Mayura? ... I may need to borrow someone's eyes in RL for this. And no, to those who've seen me RL, I'm not dying my hair.
This is as close as I can get to how this series runs, chronological order-wise. It's a fair suggested reading order too, although several of these can stand alone if so desired. The first two pieces diverge from the rest, but not as far as you might think. Works without linked titles are available for sponsorship, or incomplete and being worked on if noted.

Update: I now have a character list posted for the orange!verse. Be forewarned, some of the details in that list are spoilers for as-yet unreleased pieces. Read with caution if inclined to avoid info you'd sooner find out in stories as they appear.

Glitter Ship episode 66 is thisaway

I am seriously metaphorically dancing all over the room!
chanter1944: a house and road blanketed in snow (Wisconsin winter: buried in snay)
It's been too long, and... well reasons, and I said what the heck, why not? Have an orange!verse slice of life snippet, or rather several, somewhat listed. No warnings, save allusions to not-so-pleasant things happening to people offscreen. None of those allusions are detailed. 2054 words.

Essential Components )

Notes are important, too:

*In the interest of full disclosure, when I was growing up, we had a radio very much like the one described here, only it was on a metal shelving unit, not in a wooden cabinet, and it didn't sport any embossed lettering; that was the television. Helios is meant to be something like a Canadian branch of local reality's Sylvania, hence the /CA indicator.

*Yia-yia is Greek; according to Jilly, her grandma's coffee is second only to her mother's.

*Écoute, grouille-toé! basically means hey, listen, hurry up! If someone's in a nasty situation and drops formality while trying to raise someone on air, you might hear this one. The rest of the Quebecois translates fairly plainly.

*Yes, if you leave certain varieties of inexpensive coffee in the pot overnight and then heat it up the next day, it really can taste like liquid pencil eraser dust. Bleh!

Well, I for sure want to finish more of the Star Trek/Young Wizards stories I've got going. Valeris has a story in process that needs work yet, but it's on the list, that piece is complicated on several axes, and it's going to take a while before it's ready for the world to see. Demora has another story in the works so far, and that number may well increase. Mears does too, as does Chapel, and with Chapel's fic comes the majority of the original crew, senior and non, plus a trio of new friends--ah, movie spoilers! And you can bet there'll be more from Rand, Sulu, Excelsior and crew, with and without Demora involved - probably more without than with her, because early adventures wheeeee!

On another front, original poetry/prose needs to happen more this year. My Glitter Ship submission is getting published shortly eeeeee! but maybe I can get accepted again, or by another publication?

Third, I would love to find a wider audience for original works, orange!verse and otherwise. That's a tricky one, and I know it.

Last, finishing this slowly-percolating Band of Brothers 'Easy with languages in' fic is definitely a goal. It's a slooooow brew, darn it, but it is happening.
chanter1944: a house and road blanketed in snow (Wisconsin winter: buried in snay)
In your own space, create a list of at least three fannish things you'd love to receive, something you've wanted but were afraid to ask for - a fannish
wish-list of sorts. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your wish-list if you feel comfortable doing so. Maybe someone will
grant a wish. Check out other people's posts. Maybe you will grant a wish. If any wishes are granted, we'd love it if you link them to this post.

... Oooookay. At risk of being greedy here... yeah, this is dang hard.

*AO3 kudos, comments, and the occasional bookmark. I have a handful of works over there; most of them are Star Trek/Young Wizards crossovers that rely on knowing both fandoms, and the other is rather a niche Babylon 5 story indeed, but if people like them, I'd love to know about it. I'm Chanter on AO3, which I initially forgot to say!

*A signal boost, if someone has a favorite story I've posted on DW. It could be one of the Trek/YW crossovers, one of the orange!verse series, something from my few sojourns into Ysabet's Terramagne, even that B5 story... whichever, really, just so long as the other person truly wants to raise it up.

*If anyone has an interest and the means to do something about it, I have a number of stories available for sponsorship by donation. There's a sticky post in my journal listing same. I will always be delighted if someone wants to sponsor one of my works, but I mean zero pressure here. Zero. <3
chanter1944: a house and road blanketed in snow (Wisconsin winter: buried in snay)
This is being posted for free, just because. Zero warnings, save a little mild imagery of the first aid sort. If anyone recognizes elements of the real Leigh, aspected though she is for this series, or the real Sandy beside her, then... well, I hope my fondness for both of them comes through. Zero disrespect intended to this duo's origins; much love and appreciation, in fact, for the formative effect they had on tiny me.

Summary: Orange!verse, north of the border. You need a couple of passable musicians and a lot of willing hearts. How and why Leigh does what she does. 622 words.

Trusted Voice )
chanter1944: a Pringles can with the words 'you can't write just one' written across it (drabbles are like pringles)
This fic has been sponsored by [personal profile] fyreharper. As a note to readers, the half-price sale I had running has now ended.

Modulation )

Notes talk below the speakers, pun alert:

*Carlos is speaking and thinking in Brazilian Portuguese, as well as speaking Dutch. Caryn is at least trying to speak Dutch. Translations:

We komen uit Canada. Wij kunnen u helpen.: We're from Canada. We can help you.

Um, dois, três: one, two, three

Jij bent--: You are--

E agora: and now

*Coyote is a term for people smugglers of the far less scrupulous kind.
chanter1944: a Pringles can with the words 'you can't write just one' written across it (drabbles are like pringles)
This is part 1 of, for now, 4, and there will be more. It's been sponsored by the midnight sponsor, [personal profile] mama_kestrel.

Fair warning: Kendra has a potty mouth, a case of internalized biphobia, and a rough view of the world.

Open Carrier, Part 1 )
chanter1944: a Pringles can with the words 'you can't write just one' written across it (drabbles are like pringles)
This poem has been sponsored by the midnight sponsor, and I'll be calling you that for ages now, you know, [personal profile] mama_kestrel!

for continuity's sake, this comes before nearly anything else in the series, with the possible exception of 'Local Interference'.

Tuning Up )

Notes spin the dial:

*Radio Netherlands Worldwide (RNW) has its studios in Hilversum, Holland. There really are windows everywhere in that building.

*This crowd are speaking both Dutch and English. Translations:

Vreemde: Weird!

Iedereen y uitgepraat: Literally 'everybody stop talking'. Everybody be quiet!

*A large majority of the people at this meeting have analogs in local reality, though I've left all but one unnamed. There are lots and lots of appreciative nods to RNW staff here, though.

*The island of Saint Kitt's does, or at least has, broadcast on 555kHz at relatively low power.

*Rochester, New York's WHAM really is on 1180kHz.

*Watrous, Saskatchewan and Fort Madison, Iowa do both broadcast on 540kHz. Iowa is much more commonly heard in northern North America, but occasionally, Sask gets through too.

*Summer in North America is not a good time to be listening to lower-frequency stations; there is static of various sorts everywhere.

*1000kHz is the frequency used by Chicago's WMVP, a very strong sports talk station indeed.

*The States and Canada space their radio stations 10kHz apart. Europe, parts of if not the entire continent of Africa, the Middle East, and India all use 9kHz steps instead.

*1440kHz really is known as a graveyard frequency. There isn't much audible on it in the northern U.S. to the casual listener. Further south, signals are stronger.

*RNW has, or has had, language services in English, Dutch, French, Spanish, Portuguese, and Bahasa (Indonesia, not Malayu). Whether or not half the Bahasa service has ever been felled by the flu, I don't know!
chanter1944: a blue-shaded dyed egg (not enough blue in the world)
Will the person who sponsored 'Tuning Up' and 'Open Carrier part 1' please drop me a message? Nothing at all is wrong, in fact quite a lot is right!, I'd just like to know if you have a DW handle I can use when giving you credit for donating.
This has been sponsored by [personal profile] ysabetwordsmith. Thank you, Ysabet! In the orange!verse, sharing space in Canadian safehouses is far from uneventful, for better or worse.

TW: This fic contains, in three separate, unconnected instances, allusions to the loss of family members, obvious mental stress, and consensual sex. There's also some swearing, though nothing too filthy; Carlos and Lise each get scatological once, the rest is milder, and a lot of what wouldn't be milder is deliberately left to the imagination. :P

QRM )

Notes don't interfere with anybody's signal:

*The term QRM is a ham radio Q-code. It translates to manmade interference, as in, "Ow, you've got some nasty QRM on your signal there, are you near a power line or what?" or, "Hang on, I'm getting QRM from my roommates again--hey, can it, wouldja?"

*Translations:

Gesundheit: Bless you, your health. Something you say when someone sneezes. It's carried over from the original German into English, hence M.J. using it.

Qui brule les choses encore un fois: Who's burning things again?

*In our universe, Brampton, Ontario really does have a station that plays, among other services for a number of communities, quite a lot of South Asian programming. This is AM 530, CIAO. The call letters spelling what they do is not lost on yours truly.
chanter1944: a starscape, including a spiral galaxy (on a quest for a jewel)
Not that 33, the age-type 33. :P With me, the reference could be either, so.

This sale has now ended. All pricing is again valid as listed in the sticky post.

Because a) my birthday's coming up, b) I'd really love to share some of these stories with the public, and c) the fairly obvious, I'm putting a (largely) half-price sale out there. I'll run it from now until September 19. I say largely because anything that divides in half to less than $5 American I've left alone. I'll do my best to edit this list as time goes by and, hopefully, pieces are sold. That said... see below for the half-price price list as it stands, and a couple of warnings that seemed appropriate. The first piece to be noted with a warning is darker overall than the other, but the second might be painful to some folks as well. Check the main fiction list sticky for details if you're not sure you want to go there or you want more information, please. If in doubt, I am entirely open to messages on the subject as well. Traumatizing people is not on my list of desires.

The Orange!verse:
Working The Bands - $21.50
Jammed Transmissions (TW: this is dark) - $20.50
Clandestine Stations - $5.25
Ragchew - $12.50
Legal ID (TW: this involves dark themes throughout) - $5.75
Essential Components - $19.50
Trusted Voice - $6.25

Other Originals:
The Lamentations of Old Money - $11.50

Now, about those Cylons... Heh.

Edited to add: Yeeks! I forgot! The PayPal button, for any interested parties, is on my DW profile page. Cheers for tipping me to what I'd inadvertently left out, Ysabet.
chanter1944: an older house and surrounding autumn scenery (Wisconsin autumn: smells like fall)
Posting this for free because... frankly, it feels needed.

Lighted Display )

If you suspect that more than a few images in here came straight from yours truly's childhood... you're right.
chanter1944: a lilac tree in bloom (Wisconsin spring: lilac season)
After I realized I'd already posted about this fic being finished *facepalms*, I poked at it a little tonight and it suddenly went 'click', grew, and then incorporated a story snippet I was otherwise stuck on! So yay, but I've had to edit pricing accordingly. I've also tweaked the summary, because a fourth character got a segment to himself. Besides, the summary works better this way.

:D?
