I haven't read the book or seen the movie as a matter of principle, because I've had to listen to too many friends ranting about what a TERRIBLE example of the culture that book is. Kind of like the Tangerine Toddler as an example of adulthood.

Re book and movie: Nor have I. Unfortunately for me, my mother and at least one sister *adore* the book. Trying to explain how abysmal an example of BDSM culture, not to mention relationships in general it is gets me approximately nowhere.

It did. Twilight itself is bad enoug has relationship examples for tweens (especially tween girls), but 50 Shades takes it to whole new sublevels of the human sewer. To be perfectly clear, NOT because of the kink, but because there's grooming, gaslighting, abuse of many kinds, and it's billed as twooo wuuuv, which kicks it down several stories lower. Oh, wait, Twilight does that, too.
