From that Hetalia thing (TM). I should just tag it that way and have done with it, shouldn't I? That Hetalia thing. That Portuguese thing. That... Chanter's got a few ways she reverts to type, and one of them is showing up again thing.
Note pronouns for Timor-Leste, they/their/theirs. Portugal calls them by a traditionally female name, which is one of two (three, counting a city name used as a common nickname) they answer to. They happily and interchangeably use both a masculine name, which reflects Indonesian influence, and this feminine one, which is Portuguese. Anne is Rhode Island, Afonso is Portugal.
One heartbeat passes, two. "Luisa," Portugal says, so faintly it's practically threadbare, and his voice doesn't quite break. The name is half a question, and Anne's only sure that it's not confirmation of the evidence of his eyes that Portugal's seeking.
"You think I could stay away?" Afonso's youngest connection asks. They answer themself so quickly it's more than evident they weren't looking for a response from anyone else. "With you suffering like this--no way. There's no way. I couldn't keep out of this. I've always liked you."
