chanter1944: a house and road blanketed in snow (Wisconsin winter: buried in snay)

At least, I *think* it's snowing out there. It's supposed to, though I can't be sure if it's actually doing so; I'm not sticking my head out either a window or the street door to find out . . . bur!

I was on the low side of twelve one night back in (year redacted, but not terribly long ago) when I walked into the living room to find my father sitting on the couch watching a movie. Mildly interested, I flopped down on the other couch and joined in the viewing. Who was this, in a fight with an alien who didn't have kneecaps for kneecaps--eeew! said I, drowning out the rest of the sentence. Ooh, was that woman a shapeshifter, really? And oh my gosh, were those two - their names were vaguely familiar, but only that - going to freeze to death before they escaped the alien prison?

Yep, little Chanter had walked in halfway through the sixth Star Trek Movie, The Undiscovered Country.

I distinctly remember, once most of the other bridge crew had appeared on screen, grasping at the faintest of recollections from who knows where, half certain I was remembering the wrong name, and asking my dad, "Where's Sulu?" I credit pop culture knowledge for my knowing what the names of the senior staff even were, and who was missing, because I'd had brushes with the series before, but not much more than that. "Sulu got his own ship," my dad said.

The... worst of that movie's scenes, the infamous forced meld, I've already discussed. That is some powerful stuff at any age, and was downright shocking after the fact, once my twelve-year-old self could properly take it in. Still, the rest of the story got to me in far better ways; I was thoroughly hooked. I went from there, to episodes of the original series, to the other movies, to TNG and the later seasons of DS9 and Voyager. I was, in very short order, a gigantic Trek nerd, and that's remained the case to this day.

I've had cause to ruminate on fragments of my personal philosophy over the years, and gone ... well, that's Starfleet showing through. A dear friend and I broke the ice, on initial meeting, with a mutual recollection of a canon quote. Military hierarchy and space travel both have a draw for me, to the point of being all but hard-wired, and this particular universe if not sparked both, then at least played a significant role in sparking both.

It's sleeting here. I went out to check, but I dunno about your area.

It's so bad out there that they've closed just about everything down. My best friend's work is closed, my Indianapolis-East Harrison College campus is closed...

So yeayh, not going anywhere to day.

Star Trek seems to be the root cause of so many people finding fandom and fannishness, in so many ways. There's a lot in there!

I find it so interesting that you'd had brushes with the shows/movies before, but ~this is when it clicked for you.
