Ooh, one of those meme things!
Apr. 21st, 2011 12:16 pmI saw
newredshoes had posted this, and I went ooooh, I want to see who people ask about! Anyone I've played is fair game; Kayla, dragonriders, anybody from Milliways or Mixed Muses... whoever. Fire at will!
Give me a character and I will tell you...
* How I FEEEEEL about this character
* All the people I ship romantically with this character
* My non-romantic OTP for this character -
* My unpopular opinion about this character
* One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.

Date: 2011-04-22 02:24 am (UTC)When I started playing Sariel, I was pretty committed to shipping her with Sonya Gomez from canon. I still like the idea, but I'm not as set on it as I once was. It's also a shame that the hints of Sariel/Lucy Diamond never went anywhere. Lucy-mun, if you're reading this, hi!
Ooooh nonromantic ships, there are a few. Sariel and Will Scarlett are alike in so many unexpected ways, not the least of which is their status as one-time captives and victims of some pretty horrific things. That's not at all the only connection they have, though; he brings her out of her shell, and she can be a steadying influence on him. Sariel and River are alike as well, again with the captive and escapee situation. There's so much still unadmitted or unexplored between them, and soooo much else that's been admitted in the subtext and the silence. Fun, fun, fun. Sariel views Dale Harding almost like a brother (maybe a little brother, but at the same time she's aware he's highly educated, and she won't disregard that) who she needs to watch out for, only it's as much a want to watch out as a need. She feels strongly that she should protect him, not just because of the horror of his own world and location, not just because she's his friend, but because she knows she could easily have been in his situation had she been born in his time. Sariel and Yrael are constantly learning from each other, and in about a hundred unexpected ways, usually when least expected. Sariel and Teller are just adorable and quirky!
And oh gosh, Sariel and Gene. I always worry that people will think I set out to create Sariel as similar to Gene. I did not. I didn't know Band of Brothers canon when I started playing Sariel; her personality in canon came through as quiet and studious, and I built on that. The choice of Saint Lucia as her home was thanks to the faint hints of... whatever awesomeness it is we hear in her voice canonically. Her similarities to Roe were one heck of a happy coincidence. Thank you, bar brawl! They're two quiet, serious, intent people, and they understand each other and each other's worlds remarkably well in so many ways. I love, love, love their interactions. When they reunited after he'd gotten home from the war... I cried. Is that silly of me, Micara?
Are there enough opinions about Sariel out there to qualify popular or unpopular? If there are, I don't know any. Does the fact that I play her as homosexual count? That decision was completely arbitrary on my part, I'll say that now.
On the one hand, I wish we'd gotten to learn a little more about her; an offhand reference to 'she has a mother and father in wherever', an exact age, some little detail somewhere. On the other, I'm almost glad we didn't, now she's as fleshed out in Millicanon as she is. And darn it, I wish we'd seen more of her, even randomly at the helm, after Schisms. She didn't deserve to just fade into the background as another serving junior officer and be forgotten.

Date: 2011-04-22 02:27 am (UTC)Headcanon can be a wonderful thing, honestly Will is more than fifty percent my headcanon with touches of various takes on Robin Hood. I love Sariel so much, she's just fascinating and rich.

Date: 2011-04-22 01:45 am (UTC)Ooooh, here we go. I'll admit to shipping Shifty/Tab, because those two together are made of understated adorable, a little uncertainty, and a whole lot of genuine everything. Also Tab/Smithy, even if it's simply Smithy having someone to lean into. For whatever reason, Tab looking after Smith, whether it goes beyond a minute's conversation or not, really appeals.
Hmm. Do I have a nonromantic OTP for Talbert? I'm going to have to say the adorable trio - Smokey, Shifty and Tab, as seen at the start of Carentan. More fics with the three of them, on-duty or off, please!
I have no idea what opinions are popular or otherwise with this one! I'd say I imagine him as a hell of a kisser--wait, that's probably a popular opinion rather than an unpopular one. Ahem. :)
I... the snippet at the end of the series where we hear that 'everybody lost touch with Floyd Talbert' until just before he died... oh, but that never fails to get to me. I wanted to know that he had a life, a good life, that he was happy.
