TNG fic again
Jun. 15th, 2006 09:42 pmWritten because I've just finished watching Where No One Has Gone Before, and this fic idea wouldn't leave me the shards alone until I did something about it. I mean come on, we see enough other people's daydreams brought into temporary reality, why not one more? And I'm assuming here that Geordi at least knew a bit about Leah, as they're both in the same field. the rest is just his idea of an attractive woman and probably his subconscious playing havoc with him--ha ha ha, I'm evil. Only after they get back to Federation space does he realize oops! that daydream resembled somebody. this leads in to Second Table Turned somewhat... la la la, lovely prequels of sorts. And I always thought there might have been just a liiiittle bit more to that scene between Tasha and Geordi than met the eye...or the ear, even if it was only attraction on Tasha's part. I've got a fic in the works dealing with The Naked Now that goes into more detail there too... yup, Geordi's subconscious and that darn water molecule virus playing havoc with his perceptions of people and his willingness to talk. Cackle.
but anyway. That's for later.

It was all interconnected, system to system, one element to another--crystal, memory, energy and thought.
And travel.
Or at least that was the way it seemed. The obvious connections were already there, naturally, life’s work and training and understood by anyone with knowledge of how the ship worked. The rest came later.
The rest got accepted as it happened.
And everyone saw something. Everyone from the captain talking to his mother on the bridge to Worf and that targ running around in the hallway right down to the kids in the classrooms--everyone had something they were dealing with. He certainly did. And it wasn’t anywhere close to a kitty cat, that was for sure.
It started with the sound of the sensors, routine enough and just the usual background noise on a starship, just the usual song, definitely welcome in a situation like the one they were in. Not that anyone had ever been in a situation that out of the ordinary before, but all the same, the familiarity was more than a little bit of a relief.
It started with the sound of the ship’s sensors and just progressed from there, almost unexpected, because it was a train of thought this close to unconscious and he hadn’t even acknowledged it at first. Not until the sensors started sounding like a tricorder running a scan, and that scan followed him down a corridor and away from the bridge until the walls muffled the sensors and he was hearing and feeling the ship’s rhythm. Only.
But he wasn’t. And the sound of that tricorder turned into a second pair of heels on the deckplates, the far-off hiss of a triggered door panel, a feminine voice calling his name. He sped up and so did she, he rounded one corner and she was halfway down the next hall, he tried to call after her and she turned around long enough to give him a glimpse of engineering’s colors and dark skin, no rank pips on her collar and dark hair caught by a draft that was impossible in the space they occupied. Civilian? Starfleet? Something in between? He’d just registered the tool kit in one hand and what looked like design schematics in the other when whoosh! Thud.
And just like that, she was gone.
And he was nearly bowled over by Tasha Yar, the uncharacteristically frightened security chief skidding to a stop a foot from him, too pale to be his spectre and shaky enough to hint at a few ghosts of her own.
“Tasha, what’s wrong? You look scared to death.”
He definitely understood it, when she explained it to him. Blurring the lines between energy and thought could do terrifying things for some people. But it could turn other peoples’ heads, make them wistful, make them dream. “Well you’re safe now.”
It was only after the whole ordeal was over with and they were safely back in Federation space, minus one traveler and with their energy and thoughts as separate as they’d been before the sleigh ride began that he fully realized there was a difference between the person he’d been reassuring and the one he wished he had.
If there was one thing the adventure with the traveler taught him, it was that every daydream had a meaning.
but anyway. That's for later.
