writers_choice. This one's for you Fi, since you wanted to get to know the girls. Here's two of them at least, and it introduces Amy fully and Nancy for the first time.

The first time Amy saw Nancy, she was sitting at the donated cast-off of a rickety kitchen table that was the most visible remnant of the apartment’s past owner, combat boots propped on the rungs of the chair opposite, drinking black coffee from amug that looked hand-stenciled.

Squint.

Hand-stenciled and… pink!

The first time Amy looked at Nancy, she didn’t see the ear-length copper hair worn in a style nearly identical to her own mud brown, didn’t see the rough-looking wool of her red sweater or the patches stitched into the leather of the jacket hanging over the back of the occupied seat, didn’t see keen, introspective sea green eyes examining her.

The second time sure, but not the first.

When Amy first looked at Nancy, all she noticed was pink stenciling.

And that’s why she jumped visibly when a familiarly Midwestern accent answered the unspoken questions in roving royal blue eyes. “Yes, this’s mine. And yes I did it.”

It was only then that Amy fully took in Nancy, and as her eyes flicked away from those pink-painted clouds and she matched the other roommate grin for grin, the ice sufficiently broken between them, she caught sight of the legend beneath that cotton candy ceramic sky.
