so, late this past week...
A large padded envelope showed up at our apartment building. Turned out it was for me. In it was an absolutely wonderful set of wristwarmers, royal blue with an almost star-shaped curly cable design in a greeny-grey yarn that's close enough to match the matte surface of my grey-ace pride ring to be noticed as such. I imagine that was as close as the knitter could get without going for metallic yarn, which is, as I understand it, pretty distinct in texture. I was, and still am, thrilled! :D
To the knitter, who's also been a joy to correspond with, and to the mods over at
fandomlovespuertorico, thank you! :) These are perfect for a night's DXing, because I can avoid freezing but still have my fingers free for manipulating radio dials/antennae/switches/straight keys, or reading logs after I write them out if I bring a slate and stylus along to do things the old-fashioned way, as I tend to when working QRP. And they're darn close to my color pair!
You really do tend to treasure the little things when they're your decision, and yours alone. At least, I do. This feels not like reclamation, but that much more of a straight-up claim, on my own identity. I really do owe that crafter one. :)

One of these years, if time and money hold out, I'm going to buckle down and get my Technician's... and if time holds out, maybe get my da back into it as well. (He holds - and still uses for his day job - a General, has since ... '60? he learnt in the Navy, worked his way up from a desk job in San Diego doing transcription to being a radar op on ELINT birds, and parlayed that into running the big 85' dishes used to track Mercury/Gemini/Apollo...)
Silly question: What sort of antenna does one use working DX? And once you find a signal to work, do you switch antennas to something directional? Or do you just swing a directional until you find something?
RR THE WORLD WONDERS ;)
p.s. sympathies for your Badgers from the Ramblin' Wreck (TO HELL WITH GEORGIA!)

A technician's license is worth both the having and the using, especially if you're a CW op. I am, but I'm told I'm a rarity, especially among younger folks. I do intend to get my general, but I want to get some serious QRP CW mileage - Wattage? - out of this tech license first. And holy cow, your father is one lucky man! Satellites, yet... :)
Cheers re: bleeping football. I'd quote the next line of that song about Ohio State, but it might burn some random reader's ears off...!
