Clarisse McClellan's Daughter

The premise is that the main character was blamed for a murder he did not commit, so he fled civilization and became a mountain man. He had many grand adventures -- and was likely an inspiration for Rangers in D&D having animal companions. He was followed around by this bear named Ben.

It was just a really relaxing walk in the woods with a sweet, kind of angsty guy and a few of his friends who dropped by sometimes. I particularly remember the episode where he was battling beavers who kept trying to flood his home. He didn't want to just kill them. It was exasperating and adorable.
