Sparkity kerboom--fzzzzzt!
Jul. 20th, 2019 01:42 amSo! I'm told the events of the past day have made national news, and even if not, they've probably been picked up at least regionally. I figured I'd better update over here, considering.
Long story short, Madison had a nasty power outage yesterday (Friday). The cause was a blown - and I do mean blown, there was apparently an explosion - transformer, and it led to a series of no-fault fires at substations around downtown. I've heard two, but I've also been told four. This, understandably, led in turn to power outages all over downtown while crews put the fires out and, you know, avoided getting themselves zapped by energized power grids while doing so. No injuries at all from any of it, as far as anyone can tell, and for that I say thank God. I say thank God for a few other things as well, because I both missed the entire thing by virtue of being in Middleton by the time it all kicked off, and live in one of the buildings that had, at most, a power flicker and a brief resulting outage. W-H-E-W! I am one fortunate dame, and I know it.
By the time work wound up and I was headed back toward downtown, all fires were out, power was mostly restored, and the worst of the FUBARed traffic had cleared. I was expecting a gigantic snarl, but we actually made the square in excellent time. Bless Metro, both drivers and call center folks, seriously.
At last check, cooling centers and emergency shelter resources for both humans and critters are still in place. The worst does appear to be past, however. I'm over here, grateful for just about everything!
