chanter1944: a starscape, including a spiral galaxy (on a quest for a jewel)
This post gets a content warning for discussion of fictional parent-child relationships, and for the topic of fictional absent parents. That latter gets hella rejected, not least because it'd be extraordinarily OOC for the character in question, but I'd still rather be safe and warn.

Me, on being spoiled for one particular bit of (noncanon, thankfully) backstory: Oh *heck* no. Licensed works be damned, Hikaru Sulu is not an absent father. It'd break his heart! Whatever the reason, it'd be agony for him. Probably break Chekov's, too, and dent more than a few of Sulu's other close friends' hearts besides, just from the secondhand pain of watching the separation. He might not be there every *day*, and he'd know perfectly well going in that it wouldn't be possible to be there every day, but he'd be there in whatever capacity he could, whenever he could. The Sulu in my head is bristling like the benevolent protector he is at the suggestion of abandoning his kid. A 'McCoy kept from Joanna' situation would be torment, and truly, I can't see that one happening, thank God. Imagining Sulu and someone having as spectacular a blowup as McCoy and his ex must've had to end in that acrimonious a divorce just does not work; argue yes, perhaps argue forcefully, but explode in the fashion of McCoy running hot? No.

And as for that someone. Who says she has to be an otherwise unknown quantity, anyway? For that matter, who says either parent has to be absent? *Somebody* had to set the start of a precedent, after all...

One of the good things about noncanon novel tie-ins: You can pick and choose what elements you want as headcanon (Caitlin Barry, Janice Rand's brothers, a certain uncommon usename for Captain Pike, just to name a few of mine.) One of the good things about fanfiction: You can fix what canon, or not canon, really should have done better...

And so I darn well shall. Working on it, in fact. Ah-hem.
