Well, I finally found out just what was causing my Internet Explorer issues of a week or two ago.

Here I was, assuming IE just had a fault, that I'd fixed it, and that said fault was an isolated thing. Boy was I ever wrong! Round about... yesterday, I went to empty out the recycle bin, and discovered that it, well, wouldn't open. Neither would my computer, or my documents, or my antivirus software. Quoth the Chanter: Dang it. Word still worked, Firefox still worked, Jaws still worked, G-mud still worked. But the fact remained: I had a problem on my hands.

Today I'd had enough, went to Dell's online support site, got snarled in Firefox versus IE issues - apparently their diagnostic tools don't work with Firefox grrr! then gave up and called tech support. One l-o-n-g call, two very helpful agents, a linking of my computer to one of theirs and some borrowing of my friendly neighbor's eyes later, I had my answer. I also had a clean system *cheers!* As it turns out, what was causing my freezy system and stalling applications wasn't a fault in Windows Explorer, like I'd started to suspect, and it definitely wasn't just a flaw in IE. What I had, in fact, was one nasty, slow-acting virus that killed processes and files. In a word: Yicch! I haven't got it anymore, though; the second of those wonderful tech support agents cleaned it out for me. Definitely worth paying for, I say.*

I has a properly healthy Quark, likely for the first time in weeks rather than days. Wheeee!

*settles in with Callahan's Con and some good tea* Sometimes, things work out.

*darn pesky expired warranty, oh well
