name a pair of characters, either Milliways, SouCon or strictly canon, and I'll attempt to explain the relationship between them. these do *not* have to be romantically involved characters! Alina-Jaeni is as much a possibility as Alina/A'dar, where the slash is the indicator that yes, something romantic's gone on, and the dash is anything platonic/siblingy/otherwise connected.
and on that note, I should really go back and edit fic headers to include slashes instead of dashes, shouldn't I? Now have done so. :)

Date: 2007-10-21 07:05 am (UTC)First off, there's a difference; alina/A'dar as it was when they were weyrmated, and Alina/A'dar as viewed through Lina's eyes looking back on the relationship roughly a decade on. At the time, Lina was still very much the Holdbred girl seeking true love and complete monogamy, much as her attitudes toward just about everything else said otherwise. She was still very much coming to terms with certain bits of Weyrlife, those being the bits she didn't quite think about when she left the seahold. To that end, friendship and more with Alidar-A'dar was seized on. There was definitely real attraction there, but there was also an element of near desperation; the part of Lina that was still stubbornly Holdbred insisted that yes, this is how a girl and a boy are *supposed* to be, and I'm going to have that for myself, damn it. the result was an unusually clingy, at times out of character Alina who only slowly began coming to terms with the fact that A, flights happen and B, certain freedoms are worth having after all.
And yes, the out of character portion of Alina's behavior had plenty to do with my own emotional issues at the time. Ahem. :)
Looking back on the relationship, Lina now sees it for what it was far more clearly than she did, though admittedly she has a bias toward her own side of the equation. she started to slowly adapt to the flight-connected details of life in a weyr, and he didn't. She was attracted to a rider from another weyr and caused royal chaos coming to terms with it, and in the process realized that there were definite jealousy issues and double standards happening. she wasn't blameless by any means, and neither was A'dar. Her view of it ten Turns on hinges on the fact that she adapted to the realities of dragonriding, and to her mind, he didn't necessarily. He could be intimate with Ryann, or Udeya, and if someone else's dragon flew Kirienth, he could, and did, react violently. that combined with the reality of their growing slowly apart over time was enough to split them. She still has a favorable view of him overall; he's Liandra's father, and they definitely had something going at one point, but what was right for her just out of weyrlinghood isn't right for her now, and she knows it.
Mind, this's all Lina's view of things, not mine. *hugs* I'd be interested to see how the two acted if they met on-camera now, honestly.

Date: 2007-10-23 10:59 pm (UTC)Sariel sees River as a welcome unusual--it's hard not to see the unusual part, admittedly, but she honestly doesn't mind that aspect beyond the occasional *blink* moment. In her universe, humans don't possess any form of telepathy/empathy/telekinesis, or basically any extrasensory powers; the fact that River is a receptive telepath is a little surprising, but Sariel takes it as proof that universes aren't all the same. Granted she isn't certain that river's baseline human, but...
She tends to take River's quirks in stride most of the time; the Federation has all kinds, and some are harder by far to deal with than a cryptic psychic. She considers river a friend; she connects her at least partially to Lieutenant Selar on the Enterprise, as Selar's Vulcan and a touch-telepath. This definitely helped her get over her initial surprise when she realized she was being read. There aren't many people in the bar that she consciously switches languages around, but River's one of the ones she knows will understand if not the words themselves, then at least the meaning behind them if she does. She isn't precisely sure how River sees her, but she's hoping it's favorable.

Date: 2007-10-24 03:10 am (UTC)River finds Sariel relaxing, on the whole. She's a lot more normal than most of River's friends; she doesn't have any major past trauma, she isn't embroiled in any universe-shaking battles of good and evil, she doesn't have phenomenal cosmic powers. Yeah, she's very bright and she works on a spaceship, but neither of those are abnormal to River. But, unlike a lot of normal adults, she takes River pretty much in stride. Instead of being weirded out by her, she smiles and offers her lavender tea, and chats without any implied pressure for River to make more sense than she does.
So she's a very relaxing friend for River to be around, and she appreciates that.

Date: 2007-10-24 10:09 am (UTC)but oh, dear. Normal as she might seem, Sariel's got issues of her own, whether they're on her mind or not. She does her best to deal, but she still has triggers. Both girls have been experimented on, but Sariel's able to not think about those experiences most of the time. If River ever catches her when something's got her consciously thinking about her time in subspace however, it could go the dark and icky route very quickly. Thankfully for both parties, nothing's sparked thoughts of her abduction while River's been around, so far. If she ever finds out details of what River's been through, I've no doubt memories will be brought up.
And as I'm writing this, part of me is going 'Ooooh, that could be an interesting thread,' and the other part's going 'Do you really want to inflict that on these two?'

Date: 2007-10-25 12:21 pm (UTC)*nods* yup, she's got issues, it just takes some rather specific triggers to get her thinking about them. She has good days and bad days, and of late she tends to work the equivalent of the night shift on the Enterprise, which helps somewhat. I don't know if you know Star Trek canon at all, but if you do, the episode Schisms is where all the icky goes down for her, whether or not she has a clear memory of half of it.
But yes, we shall definitely have to see where things go, if details ever come up. *equally cheerful*

Date: 2007-10-25 04:46 pm (UTC)I watched quite a lot of ST:TNG when I was, oh, 11 or 12, and haven't watched almost any since. So my understanding of canon is decent in a very general way, but my knowledge of details for any specific episode is pretty infinitesimal, alas.

Date: 2007-10-26 08:56 am (UTC)Sariel was one of a number of crewmembers (canon says at least eight, possibly more) who were abducted from the ship by a race of aliens dwelling deep within subspace. Normally, the aliens' universe and the Enterprise's didn't even come close to connecting, and beings from either one couldn't survive in the other; the aliens created a pocket of the Enterprise's universe in their laboratory, the better to carry out their experiments.
Abducted crewmembers were sedated, restrained in a truly horrid operating theater-type room, and experimented on. Canon makes it sound like part interrogation chamber, part operating room, honestly. the aliens didn't seem to regard their subjects as life worth interacting with beyond the lab, and definitely didn't spare anyone; Geordi came back with an infection around his eyes, Riker or Worf--I forget which one it was--had had his arm surgically amputated and reattached, a minor character called Lieutenant Hagler returned and died in agony. They certainly didn't make any attempt to stop their subjects feeling everything they were doing. Sariel was taken on the same night as Lieutenant Hagler, though he was returned and she was kept; the crew were able to figure out a way to track the aliens to their own universe using Riker, who had been taken every night since the abductions began. He ended up saving Sariel's life and his own, getting them both back to the Enterprise--she was sedated and in no condition to get herself anywhere.
this's why Sariel's got very specific triggers; she doesn't remember most of her experiences in subspace clearly, but that's not to say she doesn't remember at all. Most events are hazy, and there are gaps, but there's enough there to be pretty seriously traumatic. It's Millicanon that she has fine scars from the experience, both normally hidden by her clothing.
