Speaking as someone who also jumped into shortwave with both feet, the listening at random element is accurate. When you don't yet know who broadcasts where and when, you do exactly that and (mostly) happily take what you can get.

I'm glad this world comes off as both plausible and similar; I hoped it'd do both, if for different reasons.
